Hey there! Ashley and Camden, back again as your favorite Richmond wedding photographers and undercover wedding planners! Today we’re going to talk about how to cut costs on your wedding cake.

So you’ve been browsing Pinterest, trying to find the wedding cake of your dreams. (Hey, look at our Pinterest boards for some inspo!) Or maybe you’re more a wedding donut type of person! Either way, it can be difficult to find a wedding desert in your budget that is still delicious and beautiful.

Well, we’re here to help. Here are five unique ways to save money on your wedding cake.

1. Try a wedding cake alternative!

Hey, it’s 2020 folks. No one says you have to have a wedding cake! One creative and delicious way to avoid the costs of a high price desert is to try another type of desert! We’ve seen couples do pies, donuts, ice cream, and more. There are tons of cheap alternatives to wedding cakes!

2. Look at local bakeries!

The wedding cake of your dreams could come at a significantly cheaper price from your local neighborhood bakery! The cake will likely be just as tasty as if a professional wedding baker made it, but at a lower price and with the benefit of supporting your local small businesses.

3. Simplify!

Minimalist wedding trends are in, and the ornate, icing-filled, sugar-laden cakes are a thing of the past. You may want a professional wedding cake baker, but still need to cut costs. Opt for a simple, pared-down wedding cake design without the intricate decorations.

4. Fake it til you make it!

Still set on an ornate, professionally baked wedding cake? Get a smaller size for cutting and photographs, and have a much simpler sheet cake for guests to eat–you can even get these at local grocery chains for a quarter of the price and about the same taste! You don’t have to sacrifice the wedding cake of your dreams for budget if you do this!

5. Ask your caterer!

Most caterers have partnerships with bakeries or do cakes as well! You can usually find a better price for your wedding cake through your reception caterer, rather than using another baker.

We hope these tips let you have a sweet wedding without the sour costs for a wedding cake!
